Efrance Nakajubi, an 18-year-old Senior Three student, has stunned observers after defeating a two-term NRM incumbent to win the Woman Parish Councillor seat in Kassanda District, igniting national debate on youth leadership, political participation and grassroots change.

Efrance Nakajubi, a resident of Kayunga Village in Kiganda Town Council, Kassanda District, has become a major talking point on social media after being declared the winner of the Woman Parish Councillor seat for Kayunga and Kassambya parishes in the recently concluded local government elections.

Nakajubi contested on the National Unity Platform (NUP) ticket and defeated the National Resistance Movement (NRM) candidate, Mariserinah Nasuuna, who had represented the area as Woman Councillor for two consecutive terms.

“This is unbelievable. This girl is only 18 years old, yet she has been elected Woman Councillor in Kassanda District,” one TikTok user posted.

Nakajubi, a Senior Three student at Blessed Senior Secondary School in Kiganda Town Council, told the Nile Post that her interest in politics dates back to childhood.

“Since childhood, I have been passionate about politics, and I started as a Youth Secretary in our village,” she said.

She explained that her decision to contest was partly influenced by the absence of an NUP candidate for the position.

“I made the decision after realizing that my party had no candidate. I first consulted my teachers at school and my parents, who gave me the green light,” Nakajubi said.

Nakajubi also cited persistent community challenges as a major motivation for entering the race.

“We have had a councillor who represented us for two terms, but none of the challenges were addressed, including health, education, poor access to clean water and others. That is why I decided to join the race,” she added.

She thanked voters for entrusting her with leadership and credited her campaign team for the victory.

“I had a strong ‘Gumite’ team, and it really helped secure my victory. I want to thank everyone who supported me throughout the campaigns. I am going to serve my people,” Nakajubi said.

Her headteacher, John Bosco Kazibwe, described Nakajubi’s entry into politics as deliberate and well-supported.

“She came to my office with her parents to inquire whether it was good for her to join politics. I also consulted the school director, who welcomed the idea and has been supportive, including financially. As Blessed Senior Secondary School, we are very proud of our student,” Kazibwe said.

Nakajubi’s father, Isaac Sunday, expressed disbelief and pride over his daughter’s victory. “Many people said she was too young, but I believed in her from day one because she is disciplined and has leadership qualities,” he said.

He thanked voters for their confidence in his daughter and pledged continued support. “I want to thank all the voters for supporting my daughter. I am very happy. I will always be by her side, reminding her to work for the people,” Sunday said.

Although Nakajubi has been elected Woman Councillor, her family confirmed that she will continue with her education.

“She is now proceeding to Senior Four and will continue studying while serving the community as a Woman Councillor,” Sunday said.
